With the current fiasco surrounding the importation of corned beef to Jamaica and the rest of the world from Brazil, authorities are trying to clear the air.
The Brazilian Embassy in Jamaica is now indicating that Jamaica is not on the affect list.
However, in a report by the Jamaica Gleaner the Brazilian Embassy in Jamaica has revealed that none of the 21 meat processing companies currently being investigation by that South American nation’s authorities, for their role in an ongoing rotten beef scandal, have export arrangements with Jamaica.
As a result, the embassy said in a statement that the Brazilian government was urging its Jamaican counterpart to review the unilateral ban on the product, which has been in place since Monday.
Industry Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Karl Samuda had taken immediate action and on Monday had placed a temporary ban on corned beef from Brazil pending thorough investigation and testing of the product.
The Embassy also said it was in contact with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries for any clarification needed on the matter.
“Brazil is the most interested party in resolving and clarifying these issues, and in having the current unilateral ban lifted,” the embassy noted.
“All exporting plants remain open to inspection visits by importing countries, who wish to visit exporting companies to clear up any doubts, which they may have,” the embassy further stated.
